Insect Shield

February 17, 2012

I’m pretty much a Buff addict; I use them for everything. I have about 20 of them. They’re great for containing flyaway hair strands under my bike helmet, covering my nose and mouth to protect from the chill on the chairlift, and for use as a tube top in the summer (no tan lines on the shoulders! Gotta love that). In the summer, though, the one I usually reach for is the Bug Buff, otherwise known as the Insect Shield Buff. It’s been treated with an odorless insect repellent that keeps flying pests away. It really, really works.

At the last minute I grabbed my Bug Buff to take with me to Belize, and while I didn’t bother to bring much else in the way of bug repellent, I am so thankful that I thought to bring at least the Buff. I got zero bites on my head though my legs got chewed up by the bugs really, really badly. They never bothered my head which was always covered by the Bug Buff.

I also brought an Insect Shield hat which was a similar lifesaver. I have Insect Shield pants and Insect Shield shirts and they all work great. It would have been a super good idea to bring the pants and shirt with me to the buggy Equatorial region, but I didn’t, and I suffered. So I was reminded to share this with you. If you have any doubts about whether or not this stuff is actually effective, let me assuage them. It works.

Do you have any thoughts on the use of these technologies for GearDog? My Brewster suffers from scads of moskies around his nose and eyes, but I’m hesitant to DEET him for fear of unknown toxicity.

I wouldn’t spray any repellent on a dog – their sensitive noses would hate it! But I bet an Insect Shield Buff would help a lot if you just put it over your dog’s neck.

If that doesn’t work, there are some repellents that are nontoxic, though DEET really is the only topical application that truly works IMO. You probably could put some on his head if you kept it away from his eyes and nose.

Buff works great on dogs & because it odorless, it’s more pleasant and lesss disruptive for our little adventures! And thanks for the reminder that I really need to add this to my day pack!

Somewhere along the line I picked up a specially-made dog-specific Buff. But I’m the one who wears it, reflective stripes and doggy pattern and all.

Got something to say?
