Foot sweat is real. So is that fluvial zoo of mold, bacteria and fungus that thrives inside your damp cycling shoes, trail runners and hiking boots. But there is one thing that mold, bacteria and fungus hate: The DryGuy Force Dry ($50) shoe and glove dryer. It’s like a hair dryer but for shoes.
I live in Minnesota and our summers are humid on a level so disgusting it’s disgusting. The humidity leaves no body part untouched, including feet.
What I Liked
- It works! There. Easiest review ever. All I have to do is set a pair shoes on the drying posts, set the timer and a steady flow of air is puffed into the shoe. Drying time varies of course and the max air temperature is 105 degrees. But generally for sweaty trailrunners and bike shoes they’re bone dry in about 45 minutes. Neoprene kayak booties? They’re the DryGuy’s bitch (but soaking wet ones need about a two-hour drying session).
- Air distribution is even and steady. To be clear, it does not blow a mighty Nor’easter into your shoes. Rather, it’s a steady breeze.
- Easy to store. While it may not look compact, it is, and I can stash it on a small shelf in the laundry room. If you don’t have a laundry room, stash it under the bed. Or, just do what I do when I’m too lazy to stash it on the small shelf in the laundry room: Leave it out.
- Portable. When I drove to Copper Harbor in mid-June for mountain biking, I plugged it into the wall socket of the hotel room. At the Wasau Whitewater Park weekend last weekend, I used it to dry kayak booties. I haven’t used it do dry ski boots or snow boots yet because I only got this in May. But it’ll be coming with me this winter to the ski lodges on the North Shore and beyond. If you have enough room in your checked bag I don’t see why you can’t take it on the plane.
