Ah, the rocking chair. That nineteenth-century staple of Appalachian front porches, cabin living rooms and the preferred sitting device of just about every character in To Kill a Mockingbird. The GCI Outdoor FirePit Rocker ($60) has brought our love for the rocking chair to the car camping and the après mountain biking scene.
The camp chair market today is flooded but the GCI Outdoor FirePit Rocker is a stand-out among the chairs designed for car camping.
What I liked
Insanely comfortable. The reason it took me so long to write this review. It sucks all motivation out of me when I sit down. Why? Because it’s insanely comfortable. Armrest height is spot on, the seat is wide and deep and once you get rocking, only the Jaws of Life will get you up. It rocks butter-smooth on its own platform without any shifting thanks to the GCI Outdoor Spring-Action Rocking Technology™. The cup holder is a very nice touch.
Ease of use and portability. I found it easy to use once I took the time to read the simple directions. You just stand on the bottom leg bracket and pull up on the seat handle. GCI Outdoor calls it “EAZY-FOLD™ Technology”. This chair is the #1 piece of gear that goes with me to the mountain bike trails (bike is #2, ha!) because after a long ride, there is no way I’d rather enjoy a post-ride beverage.
Durable. The FirePit Rocker is made from powder-coated steel that can support up to 250 lbs of camper ass. There is not a stitch of aluminum on this chair.
What I didn’t like
Heavy. It weighs in at a substantial 11.9 pounds. But its weight is a result of its durable construction. All this really means is that you won’t be taking it backpacking.
Where has this camp chair been all my life??
The GCI Outdoor FirePit Rocker just may have won the Gear Gals Best Gear of the Year Award (if we had one).
