Hi! I’m Ruth!
Head GearGal, Jill, asked me to join the ranks and write about…you’d never guess in a million years…yoga. There are some badass women on this site, so I am, of course, honored to be considered cool enough to hang with them. You may wonder, what does yoga have to do with all the things that these awesome women are doing…skiing, biking, trekking, and generally kicking ass? Well, yoga is about more than turning yourself into a pretzel in some sweaty studio. It’s about living in the moment. Recognizing and appreciating yourself. Uniting your mind, body, and spirit. With that in mind, these women are pretty accomplished yogis in their own right.
Living in LA, it’s almost cliche to say I’m a yogi. I took one class and fell in love with it (I’m all about anything that tells me to do the best I can and don’t compare myself to the rail-thin, hyper-flexible blonde next to me). In the beginning, it was mostly about getting some exercise, but as I continued practicing, the philosophical and spiritual aspects became equally as important to me. I practiced on and off for about 10 years, always thinking it would be really cool to teach. I finally made that happen two years ago.
Teaching has been an amazing experience so far. I’ve had to learn my left from my right, all the major body parts (hand, foot, sacroiliac crest, etc), and how to encourage and challenge my students. I am, of course, still learning as yoga is a never ending practice.
So, I hope to get to know you all and share with you some of my experiences and musings…not all yoga related.
