Tres Chicas Locas are three (occasionally four, sometimes five) women (every now and then “and men”) who, in 2011, hatched the scheme to hike the length of South America and clinched their plan with the following conversation: Trinity: “Do you want to come hike the length of South America with me?” Shelley: “Yeah!” Sarah: “Me too, me too!” And they went and did it. And are still doing it.
I loved their blog so much I wrote to ask how I could support their effort. You see, for whatever reason, it seems that women rarely get the chance to bail on everything for a real adventure. Compared to the number of men who get to flit off to chase whatever random idea they have, the number of women adventurers is small. Why this is, I don’t really understand. I’d love to find out – doing research on this is a goal of MINE. Why aren’t my goals more interesting? In my twenties I’d’ve wanted to cross Russia on a unicycle backwards, befriending random litters of wolf cubs along the way until I’d assembled a loyal canid horde, all capable of fixing a flat tire with their saliva and helping me assemble a new land bridge made out of shedded fur (anyone who has a northern breed dog knows that’s totally possible) so that I could get home to Alaska without having to deal with the TSA strip searches and gropings. Now I’m all “I dream of doing research.” Sigh.
But the Tres Chicas and their compadres aren’t out to pasture yet. They’ve almost walked across all of South America now! Outstanding. Follow their blog here. If you’ve gear or other assistance to donate to their effort, let me know and I’ll help with the logistics.
And who knows. Someday I’ll get my chance to head down to the land of the estancias, find a motorcycle and tour around for a few months. Geardog at my side is just as good as a wolf horde.
