Welcome to the new Geargals Moto section! What’s this all about? Well, I’ve been riding motorcycles on and off for about twelve years and I’ve recently revived my interest in riding yet again. I’ve ridden mostly sport bikes, but I wanted to try something new. Just for kicks, I went motorcycle touring in Belize earlier this year and, unsurprisingly, found that I loved it and really enjoyed traveling by dual sport motorcycle. I bought a new motorcycle this summer, and if you’ve been reading this site for long, you know what’s coming next – the gear!
My old gear was purchased back before many shops even stocked women’s motorcycle gear, so of course it’s made for men. I wanted to get new gear, so I went shopping and was pleased to find that local stores now have a big chunk of space dedicated to women’s riding gear. I see women on motorcycles all the time. A woman taught the Advanced Rider Course I took. The local gear shop has many women on staff. It’s pretty awesome!
Still, true to form, I think there could be some improvements for women. I’ve yet to find new riding pants that I really like – they all seem a little lacking in the fit department. I tried on everything in the local shop and nothing worked well enough for me to pay several hundred dollars for it (remember, “good enough” actually sucks). This could be because I live in a state with a small population and a short riding season – but I want to find out. So here it is, the Moto section, where Geargals takes on the motorsports industry to report on happenings, adventures, and, of course, gear. You can still find our outdoor and travel gear reviews under the Outdoor and Travel (duh) sections.
If you have an interest or ever thought you’d have an interest in motorsports, follow along as the Moto section develops! I’m excited about it and am stoked to help inspire more women to ride. The motorcycle industry is more welcoming to women these days than it ever was before – I hope you’ll join me on two wheels!
